Myth #3: Synthetic Turf Hurts

We now come to the final myth-busting article in this short series. What is the truth about how synthetic turf feels to the touch? This is an important question to answer for several reasons. A residential client will obviously want a product that mimics or improves upon the feel of natural grass, not something that will rip their skin. Likewise, a commercial client – dog daycare, apartment complex, sports team – does not want to create a potentially hazardous environment for their people. How can we address these concerns? We must go to history to find the answers.
In 1962, Monsanto began research to create an artificial play surface for urban areas. By 1964, they created the first synthetic turf product called ChemGrass. In 1966, it was renamed AstroTurf and installed at the world-famous Houston AstroDome. This original iteration was made of textured nylon fibers, and thus able to withstand heavy foot traffic, while simultaneously causing abrasions, impacts, and joint injuries because of its rough construction.
In 1988, infill-based systems were introduced. This second iteration caused fewer injuries due to the “infill,” usually crumb rubber, which was placed in-between the turf blades to provide better comfort, durability, and functionality. While this helped solve the issues with textured nylon, it created additional problems, one of which was lack of predictability due to the movement of the infill. Over time the infill would shift, thereby making the surface less safe. Enter ForeverLawn.
In 2005, ForeverLawn introduced the third iteration of synthetic turf called product-based systems. This solved the problems of the first two iterations by using more comfortable fibers, introducing low-bulk thatch fibers, providing a triple-layer backing, and requiring less infill. This means that clients using this system derive performance, durability, and comfort from the turf itself. This is imperative to recognize because many clients think that synthetic turf is still like the first two iterations. For some companies that is the case, but not ForeverLawn. We have pioneered turf product evolution. [1]
ForeverLawn’s premium product lines are engineered to follow the Product-Based System. We have three different fiber options, a triple-layer backing, antimicrobial and anti-static options, and over 25 different aesthetic options. This means that our clients may be sure they have an industry-leading, safe, durable, predictable, and comfortable product when they partner with us. Next week, we will highlight a local install which embodies the myth-busting articles from this series.
